ABOUT AATON
Based in Grenoble, France, AATON has been at the forefront of motion-picture innovation for over 35 years.
Founded by the former Professor of Electronics at Grenoble University, Jean-Pierre Beauviala - and a group of highly talented engineers from ECLAIR in Paris, their AATON 7 camera broke new ground in the seventies with quietness, camera ergonomics, steadiness, integrated video assist, timecode and a new format - SUPER 16.
Beauviala had previously shot to fame in the sixties by inventing crystal sync, the technology that enables film cameras and audio recorders to run perfectly to time and perfectly in sync with each other - avoiding the clumsy use of cables or mains lock power. His technology liberated film makers, but Beauviala invented crystal sync as a means to an end - and that reason was time recording or timecode. If every frame of film and sound could have its exact time and date stamped into it - syncing sound and multiple cameras would be made much much easier and faster.
The Eclair camera company of Paris bought Beauviala's crystal sync patent and employed him to run their research and development department.
AATON pioneered the linking of time code to motion pictures at the acquisition stage many years ago allowing precise synchronization of audio and film in post-production. It has since continued to innovate and aid film-makers with well engineered products that are ergonomically designed and a joy to operate.
In any shooting environment, time is money. On a feature set, the combination of Aaton products and AatonCode technology maximizes shooting efficiency and leaves you free to capture even more footage with a format that far surpasses the capabilities of High Definition digital video cameras. AatonCode streamlines and simplifies the film making process while their user friendly, precision cameras such as the Aaton 35-III, Aminima, XTRprod and sound gear combine to provide the ultimate in modern portable film-making. The new generation of 16mm XTR-prod entitled the X-tera is soon to hit our shores and we have a sneak preview of the Aaton Penelope 35mm camera below.
AATON's Cantar 8 track digital audio recorder was launched in late 2004 and has set new standards in location and studio sound recording. Released at IBC-06 was CantarRem, AATON's remote mixer to accompany Cantar.
